The mission of the MRWA is to preserve, protect and enhance the natural, historic and cultural resources of the Muskegon River Watershed through educational and scientific initiatives, while supporting positive economic development, agricultural and quality of life initiatives of organizations working in the river watershed.

MRWA GIS Project

Purpose: To have the capability of producing maps of the Muskegon River Watershed

MRWA Role: Project Manager

Funders: Wege Foundation, ESRI and Verizon Foundation

In 2004, the MRWA was awarded a grant for computer software and two-day training from the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI). The software, ArcView GIS, has given the MRWA Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping capabilities. With this software, the MRWA is able to produce maps of elements concerning the Watershed. The Wege Foundation also matched the grant's value with a dollar-for-dollar match of over $2,000.

With the above mentioned match from the Wege Foundation, and an additional $1,000 grant from the Verizon Foundation with a $1,000 match from the Wege Foundation, the MRWA was able to purchase a large format printer to produce large, high quality maps using the GIS capabilities.

These maps will be available to the public and educational and governmental officials to be used in resource management and educational programs concerning the Muskegon River Watershed.
